New Theta S about to appear

Postby BEEW2015 » 02 Sep 2015, 16:28

The new Theta S is being announced right now (edit: has already been announced - see the comment by mbirth below). If you want to see some samples (which will probably be published elsewhere soon), download the Theta S app. Quality looks pretty good.

Awesome! Looks like I'll upgrade in October.

The (rumoured) specs also read fantastic:

  • up to 14 MP pictures, 5376x2688 pixels
  • can record spherical video in full 1920x1080p HD at 30fps with a maximum recording time of 25 minutes (not sure if per take or if it's higher bitrate and 25 minutes = 8 GB)
  • improved WiFi with faster data transfer, about 2-4 times faster than m15
  • 8GB memory
  • microUSB 2.0, HDMI micro ports
  • Live stream (dual fisheye for now) via USB at 1280x720p at 15fps and 1920x1080p at 30fps for HDMI.

Since it can do live streaming, I think/hope it'll record fully stitched ready-to-watch video to the internal memory so that we don't need a PC to do the conversion anymore. Awesome!

EDIT:
Here's a sample picture taken with the Theta S. And another one. And another one.

EDIT2: Example video from a Theta S. Sadly, it's still recording in Dualfish format, so DualfishBlender is still required although the camera delivers a readily stitched image via the HDMI port.

Yeah, I think I will too. I would have liked an even better resolution, especially for video, but the new one is quite ok, even if you look at the photos in an iPad browser (whereas pictures taken with the m15 look lo-res in a tablet browser). I've seen a few samples, and mostly they're quite good.
Here's a photographer who has posted a few Theta S shots and videos.

How did they take the second one at the bar? Is there some kind of monopod stand you can use with this that won't show up in the photo? Nice.

My guess is they didn't use a stand at all, just put the camera on the box.

The Theta S is a great device with lots of promise. That said, it needs 4k video capture capabilities ASAP. I am so disappointed with the poor quality of the online playback compared to 360 videos captured in 4K.
I truly hope 4k video capture will be a new model in 2016. I have large USA national projects lined up and ready to go - awaiting the quality playback of 4K. I cannot make the move to the array of GoPros for 4k 360 video because my usage requires the compact and lightweight device that Theta S provides.
Please Theta developers - sooner is better! You have the opportunity right in your hands to capture the next big market - move fast!
