New Theta SC - same as S, but with coloured body

Postby mbirth » 13 Oct 2016, 01:31

I got an update for the Theta app on my Android which mentioned compatibility to the new Theta SC. And lo and behold, it's also on theta360.com. However, the specs read as if it's a Theta S in a coloured body. I wonder why they need to make the app "compatible" with that…

Or has anyone found any differences?

Interestingly despite a slightly lower price and some fancy new colors, most of the features are the same as the S. Images are still roughly 14 megapixels (5376×2688), while videos are 1080p at 30 frames per second, or 720p at 15 fps. The sensor seems to be the same, as is the battery life and size of the internal memory (8GB). The SC is about 20% lighter, but the S isn’t exactly heavy (125g vs 102g).

The biggest difference seems to be the reduction in maximum video time. With the S, you can record up to 25 minutes per video. With the new SC, that’s down to 5 minutes per video.

The news I've read seemed to indicate the app was made more user-friendly, which is probably a good idea to do when a new model comes out.

The SC also has no HDMI port. It's certainly a cost-cutting exercise.

We do actuarily not need a HDMI port when it has no support for the blender driver
and with the USB blender driver update to 1080p in November
i do not think we need it any more
it is a good idea to focus on photo spheres and a cheeper camera to reach more customers

Video gives the best results, encoding the video at a high resolution and according to YouTube's advanced specifications. YouTube currently supports 360° videos with 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, or 60 frames per second. they recommend uploading 16:9 aspect ratio stitched videos in 4K (3840x2160) resolution.
for that we have to wait
May be the Theta SC will finance the development of the Theta 4K

For me this simply looks like a replacement of the outdated m15.
